How long does it take to build a concrete pool?

Building a concrete swimming pool is an exciting process, but one of the first questions most homeowners ask is:

“How long will it take?”

The answer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the design, site conditions, weather, approvals, and finishing selections. On average, a custom concrete pool can take anywhere from several weeks to a few months from construction commencement through to completion.

However, it is important to understand that pool construction is not just excavation and filling the pool with water. There’s multiple stages involved, and each plays an important role in delivering a high-quality result that will last for decades.

Here is a breakdown of what the process typically looks like.

Planning

Before construction even begins, there is usually a detailed planning and design phase.

This can include:

  • initial consultations
  • concept designs
  • engineering
  • site inspections
  • soil assessments
  • council approvals
  • finish selections
  • scheduling trades

Depending on the project and approval requirements, this stage alone can take several weeks.

While many homeowners focus on construction timeframes, early planning is often one of the most important parts of the entire project.

Excavation

Once approvals are complete and construction begins, excavation is often one of the fastest stages.

In many cases, excavation may only take a few days depending on:

  • access conditions
  • soil type
  • rock presence
  • weather
  • site complexity

This is the stage where the pool shape physically starts to take form, and it is often when our clients first see the scale and positioning of the project come to life.

Structural Work

After excavation, the structural shell preparation begins.

This typically includes:

  • steel reinforcement installation
  • plumbing rough-ins
  • structural engineering requirements
  • formwork for certain designs

Concrete pools are customisable, which is one of their major advantages, but this flexibility also means the structural stage is carefully engineered and tailored to the site. Complex designs may require additional engineering and construction time.

Concrete

Once the structure is prepared, the concrete shell is sprayed or poured depending on the construction method being used.

After application, the concrete requires curing time to properly strengthen and stabilise. This stage is extremely important for the long-term durability and integrity of the pool.

Concrete curing cannot be rushed.

Allowing proper curing time helps ensure the structure performs correctly over many years of use.

Waterproofing, Tiling, and Interior Finishes

Once the shell has cured, attention turns to the internal finishes and visual details.

Depending on the chosen finish, this may include:

  • waterproofing
  • interior rendering
  • pebble finishes
  • full tiling
  • waterline tiles
  • coping install

This stage often has a major impact on the final appearance of the pool and can vary significantly depending on the level of customisation involved.

Luxury finishes and detailed tile work may naturally require additional time.

Pool Surrounds

Many homeowners focus only on the pool itself, but the surrounding environment is another aspect that can be good to factor in.

This stage can include:

  • decking
  • tiling
  • paving
  • fencing
  • retaining
  • lighting
  • landscaping
  • outdoor entertaining areas

In many projects, landscaping and surrounds are completed alongside the pool build to create a cohesive final result.

Weather

On the Gold Coast and across South East Queensland, weather conditions can sometimes influence construction schedules.

Heavy rainfall can affect:

  • excavation
  • concrete work
  • site access
  • landscaping
  • finishing stages

While pool construction continues year-round in QLD, unexpected weather events can occasionally extend timelines.

Site Conditions

Every backyard is different.

Factors that may impact construction time include:

  • sloping blocks
  • limited machinery access
  • rock excavation
  • retaining requirements
  • drainage complexity
  • custom engineering
  • difficult soil conditions

Straightforward flat sites generally move faster than highly customised or technically challenging builds.

Custom Pools

One of the major benefits of concrete pools is complete design flexibility. Unlike pre-manufactured pool options, concrete pools can be customised to suit:

  • difficult block shapes
  • narrow spaces
  • architectural homes
  • integrated spas
  • unique depths
  • infinity edges
  • custom finishes

That flexibility does mean the process can take longer, but it also allows for a far more personalised and premium result in exchange.

Quality vs Speed

It is natural to want your pool completed as quickly as possible, especially during warmer months. However, rushing construction can create problems that affect the long-term performance and appearance of the pool.

A properly built concrete pool requires careful attention at every stage. The best outcomes usually come from builders who prioritise workmanship and process rather than unrealistic timelines.

Whenever our team quote on projects we aim to offer realistic timelines that reflect the project scope and location. We aim to offer full transparency when it comes to managing hand-over expectations and value communication throughout the project.
